What You Should Know About BioPreferred Products
In 2002, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) started the BioPreferred program as a way to give accreditation to products that are made from renewable agricultural, marine, or forestry materials.
You’ll find the green USDA Certified Biobased Product label on a number of items in stores – everything from cleaning products and lubricants to ink, fertilizers and bioplastics (just not food, animal feed or fuel). Here’s why the BioPreferred program and label are important:
Biobased products are good for the environment and the economy. The development, purchase and use of biobased products replace the need for petroleum goods, which reduces our dependence on fossil fuels. The process also helps control climate change because the products aren’t releasing new carbon into the earth’s atmosphere.
As a consumer, you know what you’re getting…and giving back to the planet. BioPreferred labels are meant to make your eco-conscious shopping experience simpler. When you see the green label, you’ll know that the product has a verified percentage of renewable biological ingredients. The program helps us all make smarter, more informed purchasing decisions.
The BioPreferred program is creating jobs. The USDA partners with providers in the biobased industry and designates biobased products for “preferred procurement,” helping to build a strong demand for agriculture resources while creating jobs for farmers.
